1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Problem
With millions of children participating in youth sports each year, it is vital to understand the motives for, predictors of, and detractors to involvement. Children participate in youth sports for a variety of reasons and have multiple reasons for involvement (Gould & Petlichkoff, 2008). For example, the largest study of its type conducted to date (surveying 8000 youth) identified the reasons children report for participating in sport (Seefeldt, Ewing, & Walk, 2002). In Nigeria youth sports is a highly popular activity that is assumed to have important physical, psychological and social development consequences for those millions of children and youth involved (Ryan, 2010).
